Improve your Dog’s Core Strength,
Balance, Flexibility, and Endurance.

Whether you’re asking your dog to jump off the couch to go for a walk, compete in an agility event, lure course, herd livestock, or go for a hike, your dog needs the strength to perform the activity with as little risk of injury as possible. Many dogs are lacking strength in their core muscle group: the lower back and abdominals. In performance dogs we see many lower back problems, mid-back problems, and iliopsoas strains. In nonperformance dogs, the first place we see weakness as the dogs age is in the hind end and lower back. Working your dog on a Therapy Ball, EggBall, or PhysioRoll is an excellent and safe way to develop these muscles, which will aid in the reduction and prevention of problems.

But better core strength is only part of the benefit achieved from a regular workout on the ball. Ball work improves your dog’s balance and body awareness, increases his range of motion and flexibility, improves his reflexes, and leads to increased muscle tone and endurance. Ball work is an excellent crosstraining activity that you can do in the comfort of your living room regardless of the weather.

This DVD provides four easy-to-follow programs: puppy, beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Besides providing detailed demonstrations of each program with experienced dogs, the DVD also includes a seminar that Dr. Saunders held for ball work novices.

Exercise Ball sold separately.

Format: DVD, NTSC format
Running Time: 41 minutes
Release Date: 2006

Agility and other dog sports are wonderful for your dog, but training for those sports by itself is not enough to ensure your dog’s long-term health and wellness or to keep him at his peak performance. Dogs participating in performance sports require cross training activities, including both a conditioning program and strengthening exercises. Doing a variety of strengthening exercises will improve your dog’s performance and, even more important, will protect him against injuries.

Strengthening The Performance Dog demonstrates and explains a variety of strengthening exercises that should be part of your cross training program outside of agility (or any other sport-specific training). It includes exercises to improve jumping strength and power, improve collection and turning ability, increase forelimb and hind limb strength, improve balance, and increase hind-end awareness. Many of the hind-end awareness and balance exercises are appropriate even for puppies.
